Women-only hiking trip

Summer 2027

Funäsfjällen, Sweden

$2,690
Pick-up from your accommodation in Östersund around lunchtime. After eating lunch at a local restaurant, we head to our basecamp in the picturesque village of Tännäs, about a 2.5-hour drive southwest of Östersund. At night, we enjoy dinner and a welcome drink at the cabin in Tännäs and explore some nearby lookout points.
After eating breakfast at the cabin in Tännäs, we go on a day trip to Funäsdalen, the biggest town of the Funäsfjällen region. We take the gondola to the top of Funäsdalsberget and warm up for our big glacier hike by going for a shorter summit hike (5 miles / 8 km, 2 hours) and visit Lopme Laante Sámi Park to learn about the Indigenous Sámi people and their reindeer husbandry. After eating lunch at Funäsdalens Toppstuga we explore Main Street, with an optional visit to the Härjedalen Mountain Museum, before returning to the cabin in Tännäs. For the evening, we will enjoy sauna, swimming and grilling out at Tännäskröket, weather permitting.
We will eat a breakfast at the cabin in Tännäs, then pack lunch for today’s hike. Then, we will drive to the trailhead for Tvärån (11 miles / 18 km, 4-5 hours), an easy but extensive day hike that meanders through flowering, riverside meadows, birch woodland and some old settlements. By the Tvärån creek, we will find a smooth rock where will eat our packed lunch and cool off with a refreshing dip in the jacuzzi-like pools. After hiking back, we will eat dinner at a local restaurant in Funäsdalen.
We start the day with breakfast at the cabin, then head to the Muskox Centre in Tännäs, the only place in Sweden where you can encounter Härjedalen muskoxen in their natural habitat. After a guided tour of the muskoxen, we will head to Bruksvallarna and hike to the Kariknallen summit (5 miles / 8 km, 2-3 hours). We will eat a delicious lunch at the charming mountain hut at the top (the waffles with whipped cream and cloudberry sauce are highly recommended) and enjoy the solitude, silence and panoramic views. We round off the day with dinner at the cabin.
After breakfast at the cabin in Tännäs, we drive to Tänndalen and set out for Hamrafjället hike (6 miles / 9.5 km, 3 hours). This is a fairly rugged hike through flower-rich terrain abounding with cultural history, featuring several prehistoric graves and trapping pits along the way. About halfway in, we reach Anderssjöfallet, a beautiful waterfall and perfect spot for our packed lunch. From there, a stone staircase of 303 steps – built by Nepalese sherpas – takes us up and over the treeline. The reward is a wide-open mountain world, with views stretching all the way to Norway on a clear day. Back in Tännäs, we end the day at the cozy Härjebrygg microbrewery for some classic, hearty pub food and – for those who want – a sampling of craft brews, before we head back to the cabin.
After breakfast at the cabin in Tännäs, we head out for the Ånnfjället massif and Uggtjärn tarn (5 miles / 8 km, 3-5 hours). The steep climb quickly gets us up above the treeline, where the rocky, windswept landscape is dotted with boulder formations left behind by the Ice Age. Depending on the conditions, we break to eat our packed lunch at the summit or the small tarn on the way down (cold plunge is optional!), then navigate off trail to the beautiful Uggtjärn tarn. After we are done with the hike, we drive toward Mittådalen Sámi village and the Flatruet mountain highway – prime reindeer-spotting country. We will stop for fika at a Sámi café, before returning to Tännäskröket for a relaxed BBQ dinner at Arran Restaurant to round out the day.
We will have an early breakfast at the cabin in Tännäs and then head to Östersund for drop-off at the airport and/or train station.

Our meeting point is Östersund. The Åre Östersund Airport serves flights from Stockholm daily. It is also possible to get to Östersund by train from Stockholm or Trondheim. The 2.5-hour transfer from Östersund to our base camp in Tännäs is included.

No, but you need to be able to hike about 10 miles (16 km) carrying a daypack. Most of the hiking goes through easy to moderate terrain, but there are some more difficult inclines. However, none of the summit hikes are technically advanced and no equipment is needed. The pace will be adapted according to the group’s ability.
Regular hiking gear, a day pack and comfortable boots will take care of most of your needs. Rain gear and/or waterproof shell garments are recommended, since the weather can change quickly in the mountains. We will go over everything together well in advance of the trip and you will get a suggested packing list, so no need to worry.
There are several options for getting to Östersund.
To avoid stress and mitigate potential travel disruptions, it is highly recommend to arrive in Östersund a day early. You will be picked up at your hotel for the 2.5-hour drive to our base camp in Tännäs.
We operate rain or shine but respect the powers of nature and the sometimes-capricious weather conditions in the mountains. The safety of our guests is always the first priority and we reserve the right to change the itinerary in case of harsh weather.
Once your booking is confirmed, we ask for a 25% down payment to hold your spot, with the remainder due by the end of the year. The down payment is non-refundable, but the remaining 75% is refundable until 90 days prior to the trip.
